A Note About Facebook and Privacy
Facebook applications may access any information that you share with “Everyone” on Facebook, as well as information that is permanently visible to anyone (your Name, Profile Picture, Gender, Current City, Networks, Friend List, and Pages). It is important that you routinely check your privacy settings on Facebook so you can manage what information is visible to “Everyone”, and perhaps restrict access of some information to just your “Friends”. To do this, go to the “Account” menu in the upper right hand portion of your Facebook page and click on “Privacy Settings.” Once you have clicked on “Privacy Settings,” you can specify which types of people can see various types of information about you.

We encourage everyone who uses Facebook to read Facebook’s Privacy policy as well as Facebook’s guide to privacy. Also, please remember that Facebook requires that all users of its service be at least 13 years of age.

SearchIt Privacy
SearchIt is powered by a customized version of the Google search engine. Any time you use Google.com, Google automatically records your SearchIt actions in their files. The information Google stores includes:

  • Your search terms (such as “Martin Luther King” or “Great Wall of China”).
  • A numeric code that identifies of your computer’s Internet connection (similar to a phone number for your computer on the Internet).
  • The date and time of your search.
  • One or more Web cookies (a set of characters that may uniquely identify your Web browser to Google).

Some of this information might be linked to a particular computer or Web browser, but Google generally cannot identify an individual user from the data stored. You can learn more about what Google collects about your searches at Google’s Privacy Center and by watching this video.

AttendIt Privacy
You can share content from AttendIt by clicking the “Share” button within the event search results. When you click “Share,” a small window will open with links to numerous popular social networking websites. You can click any of these links to share a specific event on the site selected (you will likely need to register/login to those external websites). Items you share through this feature will be visible on the site selected based on your privacy settings for that website. Please keep this in mind when you share information.

This feature is powered by AddThis, a popular third party service not related to The New York Public Library. AddThis records certain non-personally identifiable information, such a numeric code that identifies of your computer’s Internet connection (similar to a phone number for your computer on the Internet), and usage data, when you share information using its services. Please read the AddThis Privacy Policy and Help Page for more information about what information AddThis might be collecting when you use the service.

ListIt Privacy
When you create lists of books or other library materials on ListIt, a record of all your selected items is automatically stored by NYPL (and possibly by any third-party service providers who perform back-end functions related to this App). This data is stored by NYPL (and any such third-party service providers), and is linked to your Facebook account with your unique Facebook ID number. You can remove books or entire lists at any time, and the records will be removed from the NYPL storage files accordingly (but may be retained by the third-party service providers who perform back-end functions related to this App for a period of time).

You can share lists created by ListIt by clicking the “Share” button, visible when looking at a previously created list. When you click “Share,” a small window will open with links to numerous popular social networking websites. You can click any of these links to share a specific list on the site selected (you will likely need to register/login to those external websites). Items you share through this feature will be visible on the site selected based on your privacy settings for that website. Please keep this in mind when you share information.
